A Nigerian medical doctor, Obinna Igwillo, has performed robotic surgery in the United States.
A native of Abia state, Igwillo seems to have broken a remarkable medical record using robotics for surgery.
According to reports by ThisDay, he performed the surgery with a team of doctors and other medical personnel; which were drawn from Fayetteville Veteran Affairs Medical Centre, North Carolina and the Department of Defense.
The Nigerian has been noted to be working on the medical robotic technology since 2014; a technology which carries out complex surgeries with minimum incisions.
Meanwhile, Igwilo’s employers have described him as an individual who has had an “active engagement with the training of medical students and surgical residents.” He has worked as a clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery with Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicines.
He graduated from the University of Nigeria College of Medicine in 1986 and had his internship at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, before proceeding for his externship at Whipps Cross University Hospital in London, UK.
He is also a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons Glasgow and Edinburg; and American College of Surgeons.
