Five Nigerian students win debate competition in Singapore

Five Nigerian students who represented the country in a debate competition in Singapore have emerged winners and returned to country.

The five students, who are from Bauchi State, northeast, Nigeria, emerged winners in the Oldham Cup Debate Championship which had participant students from other countries like China, Hong Kong, India, Korea and Taiwan.

They students had travelled to Singapore after emerging winners in the Presidential Schools Debate organized by Office of Wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari. They were accompanied by two teachers and the Chief Librarian of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

On arrival back to the country, the students and teachers were received by the state SUBEB Chairman, Professor Yahaya Ibrahim Yero, who commended them for the feat they have achieved; stating that they have made not only Bauchi State proud but Nigeria as a whole.

The State SUBEB Chairman said that if opportunities would be given to children in Bauchi State, they will perform above expectations; promising that the tempo would be maintained so that students are encouraged to excel in their studies.

He commended the State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, for his support and encouragement by financing the students and their teachers to Singapore; emphasizing that the feat has also shown that despite challenges, the north east and the entire northern part of the country is utilizing its human potentials especially in the area of education.

Explaining how the composition of the students was made, Prof Yero said the students were selected out of forty best students; two from each of the twenty local governments of the state.

Abdulbarri Yahaya, the students’ team leader, thanked the Bauchi State Government, SUBEB and all others including their parents for their supports and encouragement. Responding further, one of the students, Maryam Ya’u, said they are glad for participating and winning the competition which has become an encouragement for them to face their studies and achieve more in the future.

The five students who participated in the competition are Abdulbarri Yahaya, Hamida Aliyu, Hassan Ali Hassan, Maryam Ya’u and Rashida Dauda.
