Ugochi Obidiegwu, a cabin crew and safety officer for the Nigerian airline, Aero Contractors, has been named in the shortlist for The Safety and Health Excellence Awards 2018.

The Managing Partner of Ulomka Multi Solutions, Ugochi, popularly known as ‘The Safety Chic’, was shortlisted for the Rising Star of the year category in the Awards.

The organizers of the Awards disclosed this in Lagos, Nigeria; stating that the Awards are geared towards celebrating innovation and achievements in the health, safety, security and fire sectors. The ceremony will encompass the long-established British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) Awards which promote the importance of innovation and underline the highest standards of excellence within occupational safety and health.

More than 150 entries were received and later whittled down to a shortlist of 75 entries across nine categories by an esteemed panel of key figures in the industry.

Other nominees in the category include Adam Gomes (Altius VA), Alexandria Roberts (Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service), Dale Hughes (Essity Operations Manchester Ltd), Kirsty Johnson (Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust), Luke Hunt (Hunter Safety Solutions), Matt Hazelton (Proud2bSafe Ltd), Melenie Tennela (H&S Made Easy), and Richard Isingoma (Doosan Babcock General Maintenance Service LLC),

Ugochi manages a safety business and has been very passionate about increasing safety consciousness in Africans in order to reduce the number of accidents arising from human error. This she has been doing through organising safety education events – 2TYI (Train Them Young Initiative), Annual School Safety Summit which happens in May, and Movie Day with The Safety Chic.

The Safety Chic creates innovative safety products – poster packs which serve as visible reminders of safety precautions, and also uses social media advocacy via @TheSafetyChic where she shares tips, articles and videos that help people become safety conscious.

Ugochi believes that focusing on children early would lead to future behaviour modification; hence, one of the invaluable tools often used is teaching safety tips through stories. She has done this through her child safety story book series – The Adventures of Muna: A Kid to Kid Safety Guide.

The organizers disclosed that the Awards ceremony is scheduled to hold at the prestigious VOX Conference Centre on 11th April 2018 at the NEC, Birmingham. It is hoped that this is the ideal opportunity for the industry to gather to celebrate excellence; especially with the leading safety, health, fire and security brands on site for The Health & Safety Event and Fire Safety Event.
