The Transverse Newsquakes: Nonchalant National Assembly, Ekiti Bars Fayemi, and Three Others

In the midst of so many issues in the polity; herdsmen crises, fuel scarcity and all, we bring to you the Newsquakes for this past week.

The National Assembly resumed this week, how have we missed them?

Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara in their separate sittings decried the unpleasant developments while they were away, mentioning the fuel crisis, herdsmen killings and all. (These events were apparently so unpleasant that they couldn’t call an emergency sitting, I guess their holidays were more important.

Also, our ‘favourite’ senators, Dino Melaye and Ben Bruce gave powerful speeches on the state of the nation, decrying the perceived incompetence of the executive. Senator Murray Bruce particularly called for Senate president Saraki to be made substantive president. Alright.

But the speech we all loved was by Senator Misau who took a swipe at President Buhari for leaving the nation in the hands of cabals who seem to be running the country aground. He also described so many people appointed by the president as incompetent. Errr, these include those ministers we waited six whole months for.

Now after all these powerful speeches and ‘venomous spitulations’, we await what will come of it all. We hope it won’t be the ‘all talk, no action’we are already used to.

Meanwhile, while some senators were bothered about the state of nation, one Senator Sunny Ogbuoji from Ebonyi state was more concerned with getting closer to the cookie jar ahead of the upcoming elections. He came under order 43 of the rules of the Senate to announce his defection to the ruling APC from the PDP on Wednesday. This led to a rowdy session and in the end his new year resolution was thwarted by his colleagues in the PDP, who were having none of that.

Also this week, Ekiti state government barred former governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, from holding a public office in the state and the country for 10 years.

In a white paper released by the State Government, Fayemi alongside his Commissioner for Finance, Dapo Kolawole were barred after they both failed to appear before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the current government to investigate his tenure which ran from October 2010 to 2014.

The report of the Commission indicted both men of mismanagement of the state’s finances while in power.

People would ask, is he not the Minister of Solid Minerals, well Yes he is. If you ask if he will still continue to be, we still say, Yes, he will.

As if we don’t all know what is happening when a governor decides to use all the paraphernalia of his office to bar two top politicians of the opposition ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections in the state.

Super Eagles Coach, Gernat Rohr said he would allow players come to Russia with their girlfriends/wives during the World Cup slated for June.

Well, this news came after he signed a current extension, so we are thinking it might be a sign he is biting more than he can chew. Or, that he doesn’t like the way the team is performing well and enjoying the goodwill of Nigerians. While, some teams have tried it before and it worked, Nigerians cannot be trusted with this privilege. The psychological boost he wants might just turn ‘psychological something else’.

Errr, who is going to vet which is which? I hope it’s not the same people that did not know Shehu Abdullahi had two yellow cards before fielding him against Algeria. Quick question though, will someone like Ahmed Musa come with the two wives?

On the flip side, this might be quite thoughtful of Coach Rohr, at least we won’t have cases of players sneaking sex dolls into their hotel rooms.

In more cheering news, Our CHAN Eagles finally scored as they pipped Libya 1-0 to move to the top of Group C courtesy of a Sunday Faleye strike in the 79th minute.

Goal scoring has been an issue for the team dating back to the WAFU cup held in Ghana last year. The Coach SalisuAbubakar side were quite wasteful and lacklustre in their first game which made many analysts and fans alike lose faith in the team.

The Eagles had played out a goalless draw with Rwanda on Monday and will play Equitorial Guinea on Tuesday. They are currently tied on 4 points with Rwanda and look good to progress.

Catch up with us same time next week for more Newsquakes.
