Discipline, Dedication And Hard work

Wow! I’ll have to admit that the last couple of weeks have been really hectic for me. I’ve never been under so much pressure and deadline to deliver and catch up with, but it’s the life I chose, so I can’t complain. That is not even an option.

So, this week, I’ve come again to discuss very briefly, ideas and values that can totally decide ones fate in whatever profession or career choice that you make, and after the discussion, relate it to what I do these days which are- writing and deejaying. (You knew I would do that right?)

To drive my point home in this week’s article, I’ll use a particular case as a the quintessential example of what determination, hard work and dedication can achieve if applied to a particular line of action or even a profession as the case may be. This example has caused my brows to be raised, especially in the Nigerian entertainment industry and particularly in the disc jockeying realm.

Anybody knows who DJ Obi is? I’m certain the name rings a bell, even if you might not be able to put a face to the name just yet. But the fact remains that with the features and qualities mentioned above, this disc jockey has successfully placed himself in the world map and has become a world wide, international disc jockey.

Prior this singular feat achieved by this young disc jockey, DJ Obi used to be just a randomly good disc jockey that did local gigs around Lagos and its environs till his decision to beat the Guinness Book of Records for the longest deejay set ever. His target was to play for 10 straights days back to back. A feat that no one had ever thought of or even dared before.

Now, just picture in your mind what it would take you to do a particular activity for 10 straight days without sleep, but only minimal time off to take a leak, eat and then get back to the activity at hand. Imagine the mental and physical preparation it would take to attain this feat. Can you begin to imagine the fatigue that comes from tasking your mental and physical faculties continuously for that duration?

You might have a contrary opinion, but this event personified the combination of sheer determination to succeed, hard work, discipline and dedication all of which gave him his desired results. Now, he has become a Nigerian worldwide deeyaying sensation, touring the most luxurious party places across the globe.

My point in essence for this week is, irrespective of what you do or what your job description is, no matter how “unsuccessful” it might feel like in the initial stage, it will be worthwhile for you to stick to whatever it is that you do, dedicate your time and resources to improving and becoming better, be disciplined in all context of the word, especially regarding your career and work hard at it. And in no time, just as these qualities worked out for DJ Obi, they’ll work out for you too as long as you apply wisdom and innovation to whatever it is that you do.

I’ll run for now till I come again next week. PEACE OUT!!!
